Writer finds UNLIKELY Connection WITH BALDWIN BY WAY OF HER ROOTS

An Alabamian studying James Baldwin discovers a surprising connection to the writer, by way of an artist living in her home state, in this piece in the Oxford American.

LOOKING BACK AT THE LIFE of a political reporter from a different era

Curtis Wilkie has lived an amazing life as a man of letters. I thoroughly enjoyed the interview with him in The Bitter Southerner.

the demand for OZEMPIc produces dangerous counterfeit market

Vanity Fair continues to have some of the best in-depth reporting published today. This piece explains the difficulties of tracing and tracking down the sources of dangerous counterfeit versions of Ozempic.

you can never go home again?

If you were part of the original audience for “The Breakfast Club,” you’ll love Tim Murphy’s latest novel. I was sucked into it early and was indeed surprised by a couple of the twists and turns it took. It will be a great summer read for so many people, especially if you’re traveling to the beach or mountains.

Celebrating 30 years of four weddings & a funeral

I don’t actually remember when I first saw “Four Weddings and a Funeral,” but I know it wasn’t in a theater during its initial release. It was at some point on TV. Today it remains one of my favorites, so I was thrilled that Air Mail Weekly published an oral history.

In case you forgot why we need journalists

Texas Monthly is one of my favorite reads — an amazing group of writers telling great stories from across the Lone Star State. This article sheds light on the environmental hazard presented by oil wells abandoned by private companies off the Texas coast.

the trust for public land

I don’t even know how I first learned about TPL, but I’ve been a supporter for more than 15 years. I think public lands become even more important as our population grows and more of the country converts from rural to urban.

atlanta lab rescue

I miss Adoption Day, when volunteers get to spend a few hours with a rescue dog (or two) looking for a forever home. But I will continue to support ALR in any way that I can.

pro publica

Journalism is so important. Investigative journalism even more so. As the news industry continues to struggle to find its footing in the digital age, I think it’s important to support a discipline that’s critical for a democracy’s long-term health. ProPublica serves as a watchdog for all Americans.

MEtro animal care & Control

I’m finally a blue belt — meaning I’ve graduated from being a first-level volunteer and can now take dogs for walks. MACC makes it so simple to join and contribute to the work they do.

senior ride nashville

Because of this organization’s weekday support times, it’s tough for me to volunteer with this fantastic group. However, I continue to enjoy supporting it when I can.

wags and walks nashville

Another great local organization supporting animals in need and connecting them with loving homes. And volunteering with them can be as simple as doing laundry!

world vision

I’ve been sponsoring kids through World Vision for more than 15 years. It’s a highly rated charity, so I know I can trust the work they’re doing and how they’re allocating donations.

npr

I’m indeed an NPR nerd — I’ve been to a taping of “Wait Wait … Don’t Tell Me!” and I heard Ira Glass speak a few years ago on his tour about “This American Life.” I’m now a supporter of WPLN.

human rights campaign

This organization is one of many to which I’m indebted for the work they’ve put in through the decades, enabling me to live the life I do today. HRC gets its criticism, but no charity is perfect. I’m grateful for their work.
