APOCalyptic odyssey

Let’s get the most important detail out of the way: The dog doesn’t get killed. One of Lark Ascending’s key characters is a beagle, and novelist Silas House said so many people have wanted that reassurance before approaching this riveting recent work of his.

HAUTe couture & dagger

If you haven’t discovered Graydon Carter’s newest venture, Air Mail, I’d encourage you to do so. This piece on Sir Edwin Hardy Aimes was fascinating. I love coming away from an article wanting more people to know the story and grateful that a writer ensures they will.

journey to self-discovery

Ever enjoy a sophomore album or a movie sequel more than the original? That’s where I found myself with Andrew Sean Greer’s follow-up to his Pulitzer-Prize winner. Maybe it was all the experiences and encounters across the American South, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.

lend these xers your ears

I have no idea why it took me so long to start listening to Smartless. I’ve known about it for at least a year but just joined the ranks of its fans in 2023. If you’re new to it too, I’d recommend this episode with Dana Carvey. Funny and informative show.

RAGS to revelation

I don’t read a lot of memoirs, and even fewer penned by celebrities. So I’m grateful I took the leap with Martin Kemp’s first-hand account of life in an ‘80s and after. He has provided so many insights into the New Romantics scene and shared the lessons he’s learned along the way.

men both red & blue

I still miss David Granger. But Esquire does seem to be returning to what it was under his tenure: a magazine for American men of every stripe. A piece I recently enjoyed tells the story of a man who is finding a way to live despite all the pain he endures.

the trust for public land

I don’t even know how I first learned about TPL, but I’ve been a supporter for more than 15 years. I think public lands become even more important as our population grows and more of the country converts from rural to urban.

atlanta lab rescue

I miss Adoption Day, when volunteers get to spend a few hours with a rescue dog (or two) looking for a forever home. But I will continue to support ALR in any way that I can. I look forward to when the pandemic fades and we can safely return to those meet-and-greets once again.

pro publica

Journalism is so important. Investigative journalism even more so. As the news industry continues to struggle to find its footing in the digital age, I think it’s important to support a discipline that’s critical for a democracy’s long-term health. ProPublica serves as a watchdog for all Americans.

world vision

I’ve been sponsoring kids through World Vision for more than 15 years. It’s a highly rated charity, so I know I can trust the work they’re doing and how they’re allocating donations.

npr

I’m a huge NPR nerd — I’ve been to a taping of “Wait Wait … Don’t Tell Me!” and I heard Ira Glass speak a few years ago on his tour about “This American Life.” I’m now a supporter of WPLN.

human rights campaign

This organization is one of many to which I’m indebted for the work they’ve put in through the decades, enabling me to live the life I do today. HRC gets its criticism, but no charity is perfect. I’m grateful for their work.
